Where was I/ up in the corner of the attic, by the high green mountains, where trout hide in the cracks ans seams, covering themselves in cool, lively waters.
I was at a breakfast table of salty ham, coddled eggs, black toast scraped white, and smeared with butter, milk, with the cream stirred down, served it a jelly jar. Juice in a jelly jar. Gram took her shots in the thigh.
I was on a stage, in a play, feeling betrayed. People staring, laughing, lights in our eyes, wondering, why would
they do this to us?
In a church, large and cold, eating Christ for the first time, Lost in the thought of that, so struck that i never recovered.
I was in a parade, in a small town, some miles from here, blowing spit through a baritone. I remember flowers, their smell. and wondering why they would put the horses ahead of the marching band. I had been drinking.

vivid flashbacks to childhood - disconnected bits of a single tapestry - eerily evoking similar bits of my own --- my gram & her guava jelly... grampa with his teeth in a glass, taking his shots in his forearm... us boy scouts marching in the memorial day parade... standing at attention on the common, Mark Putnam passing out next to me in the heat, & me & Barney (Sherwin? Schwinn?) tending to him, loosening his collar & raising his feet... Shit, I'd forgotten that until I read your poem...

memories feel the hot black top feel the pebbles and scree feel the spongy grasses the shifting sands and then pulsing floorboards
as soles trod from era to era to now.

the past plays hit & run sometimes bleak stark sacred plastered graffiti dreams of yesterday ... gone but not forgotten, I no longer drink but I still enjoy getting drunk on the past once in awhile. Thanks for sharing this.

This is beautiful. Astounding work.
I will have to read this many times over for the cadence and nuances.
Well played!
Much Love, David.
