Settle in my friends for I shall tell you a tale about the teachings of Cat and the wisdom of Dog.
It was an auspicious day for Cat when she witnessed her humans bring back a new addition into the home.
This four legged, tale waging, (potentially war waging) fur friend? Would become a welcomed challenge for her because Cat was rather lethargic and bored as of late.
She was excited at the thought of finally being a teacher for a new generation of companion for her humans.
She was aware that the evolving monk-keys could use a few extra friend’s along the journey.
She recalled the day when she was first brought into the hearth and home and was greeted by her old, grey feline predecessor.
Cat was then just a kitten, a young and playful sort of thing, spontaneous and full of mischief which seemed to please her humans very much;
but her instructor was an aged and slow moving sort, yet she was prepared to teach the little one the ropes.
In the months and years that followed much information was imparted and Cat developed quite the knack for keeping her humans busy.
She learned the finesse of being fussy about food.
She knew which furniture the scratch if she wanted to get her humans attention.
She was taught how to set boundaries and refrain from always giving affection to her humans because that made it more special when she did sit in their lap or nestle in between them in the warm spot on the bed.
They didn’t try to move her because they appreciated her elusive company at that point.
She kept her humans active by having them unravel the yarn mazes she would make in the middle of the night,
and she never forgot to show respect by leaving them little gifts that she had caught while prowling around in the high places within the attic.
Yes Cat had learned quite well from her teacher and it was a sad day in-deed when her humans left in the car with that old feline friend and she did not return with them.
The home felt different after that and Cat was rather lonely but she remembered her lessons, don’t give too much affection, don’t pur too loud, don’t always go running when you are called and never stay content in one position for too long, one must always keep their wits about them and their guard up, lest some predator be able to pick you off so easily.
But today was a new day and in came a new addition to the family and Cat was quite pleased to see her humans so happy and cheerful once more.
As soon as they set the little four legged fur ball down it began to bounce around, spinning in circles chasing its own tale.
What a sight to see, it even made Cat happy though she wasn’t about to show it.
Dog started to run from room to room sniffing and snorting and sifting through anything he found on the floor, as the humans watched him and chatted and chuckled about how he was getting familiar with his new territory.
WHAT!
Territory!!
His new territory!!!
Surely they had said that wrong…
This was Cat’s home, these were Cat’s humans, her family, and this new little ball of fluff was going to take over?
Well she would have to start in right away with training then!
This was her time to establish a hierarchy; envisioning herself at the top in protection of her people of course, but she would even settle for equal, he was a cute dog after all.
Well little did she know that Dog had a wisdom all his own and he was not interested at all in hierarchies or living a life of hyper vigilance, weary of predators.
No, Dog was domesticated long ago and he preferred to be a part of a family unit rather than struggling for the position of “top dog.”
As soon as Cat had a moment alone with Dog she sauntered in to make her introductions, but before she could even say a thing, this boisterous little bubble of joy ran over and licked her right smack on the side of her face!
Cat didn’t know what to do or how to respond..
She was at a loss for words.
The truth is that she enjoyed his spontaneity and it reminded her of her early years when she was a wee little fluff of a thing herself.
Quickly she regained her composure though and let out a good long hissssssss to set her boundaries.
Dog paused and looked at her, then just proceeded to bounce off in the other direction and continued exploring joyfully.
Cat decided that she was going to re-approach this situation after some observation, so she perched up high on one of the mantle ledges in the living room and settled in for an afternoon of studying her new student.
Dog was such a different sort of creature, he was so full of energy, very happy, always sniffing things and he made her humans laugh a lot,
She hated to admit it but he even made her laugh, though you could never tell because she hid it well.
He was new to the home yet within half a day he was already responding when he was called and he always ate whatever he was served.
He snuggled in with her humans and played nonstop.
Cat was perplexed.. her humans always responded well and never pushed him away and they even seemed to enjoy the fact that he was always willing to give affection and slobber all over them.
There was a small part of Cat that was starting to become jealous, the jealously was just a mask for sadness and longing, because she remembered when she was a kitten, how similar she had been,
She was boisterous and rambunctious, always wanting to be pet under the chin; but her teacher trained her to be more reserved, to hold back, and to maintain the etiquette of a feline.
Now here enters this Dog and he is doing whatever he pleases and he is making her humans so happy; she feels left, missing the affection he is so readily receiving.
It wasn’t until later that night that Cat and Dog were left alone.
The humans had put Dog into a cage and that was the first time that Cat saw a different side of Dog.
He curled up in the corner and began to cry softly to himself. She decided to go closer to inquire as to what was wrong.
'Why are you crying Dog, are you not happy to be here in this home with these humans? They seem very happy to welcome you.'
Dog looked up through teary eyes and confessed that yes although he was happy to be here he also missed his brothers and sisters and his mother.
He was told that he would be going on a journey to a new place where it would be his job to bring joy into the lives of those who would become his new family,
This was a big responsibility to carry, he was just a puppy after all, not quite a Dog yet.
In that moment Cat realized that is was silly of her to think that she would be a teacher for this new companion.
They were different and had different gifts to offer and responsibilities to fulfill;
She even realized that she too should have questioned what she was taught by her predecessor because we are each created uniquely and we have our own abilities to share.
What purpose did it serve to refrain from being affectionate?
Why should she be so reserved when she wants to play and have fun like she used to?
Why must she be so quite when she purrs if it makes her humans happy as well as herself?
Cat may have thought that she was a teacher, but that night she learned from the wisdom of Dog that one should always question what they are being taught and each of us is different for a reason, it’s okay to embrace that.
Cat stayed with Dog throughout the night and their companionship made it easier for him to adjust to his new surroundings. She shared storied about her humans and he imparted some of his wisdom that his mother and siblings had passed onto him.
In the morning when their humans came into the Living room to see Cat and Dog sound asleep side by side with the thin bars between them, they decided that the cage was not needed,
this was a family after all and if Dog wanted to sleep with them in the bed beside Cat, there was more than enough love to go around.
