Love the meshing of your words with that image of the pine barrens. We have a wilderness area here in Louisiana that has dry soil due to being rocky. My late wife and I used to hike the rugged seven mile trail and sometimes would hear a small plane overhead. Your poem and image took me back there. Thank you, my friend.

Thanks John - appreciate your comments. These barrens run alongside the Millers River, on sandy soil long-ago washed down from the uplands. Until recently, it was dense, piney forest - until the state created the barrens by clearcutting, hauling away the debris, & seeding it with grasses. The landscape was gray immediately after - but now it's a tapestry of green in the spring, reds, yellows, tans, & browns now - perfect habitat for pheasants, which they stock. I met at least a dozen hunters that day - and one soaking-wet black lab.
Apart from the occasional shotgun blast, the silence of the moment was broken only by a light plane overhead - and one lone cricket somewhere out in the scrub.

A testament to natures tenacity. Nature never fails to humble me.

Thanks, Renee. You might find my time-lapse of forest succession interesting as well - nature turning a patch of bare ground into dense undergrowth over a 15-yr period. It's in this forum, titled (you'll never guess) "Forest Succession".

I watched the forest progression and I was stunned at the difference especially for period between 2016 and 2021. What a change in the landscape! Great time lapse pictures and it sounds like a technological nightmare recreating it after the computer crashed. You should be commended for your dedication.

Thanks REnee. (Dedicated? More likely, anal retentive with a lot of time on his hands! Though the magic of audio editing has long been one of my Sirens... something about creating a world that exists only in the headphones...)
